NIE and Residencias

The "NIE" (Numero de Identidad de Extranjero) is a number issued by Spain to identify foreigners wishing to develop professional or business activities in Spain. You need them, for example, to open an account with a Spanish bank and to buy a vehicle.

To apply for a NIE you need:

ID card or passport plus a copy
2 photos

To apply for a Residence you need:

As an employee, worker, or self-employed person in Spain

ID card or passport plus a copy
Registration at the town hall (Empadronamiento, max. 3 months old)

As an employee or worker:

Employment contract
Last payroll (Nomina)

As a self-employed person:

Working Life
Last Income Statement (Modelo 130)

As a pensioner:

ID card or passport plus 1 copy
Registration at the town hall (Empadronamiento, max. 3 months old)
2 photos
Original S1 or E121 Pension Certificate (translated into Spanish)

For non-pensioners:

ID card or passport plus 1 copy
Registration at the town hall (Empadronamiento, max. 3 months old)

Private health insurance certificate in the original (with data of the holder) and this sentence:

“ASSISTENCIA PRIMARIA, ESPECIALIDADES, INGRESOS HOSPITALARIOS E INTERVENCIONES QUIRURGICAS”,

without conditions and additional payments and valid for at least 1 year in Spain
Proof (account statement, only income) of sufficient financial means to live in the country (at least 7,000€ per person/year as monthly income)
