NIE and Residencias
The "NIE" (Numero de Identidad de Extranjero) is a number issued by Spain to identify foreigners wishing to develop professional or business activities in Spain. You need them, for example, to open an account with a Spanish bank and to buy a vehicle.
To apply for a NIE you need:
- ID card or passport plus a copy
- 2 photos
- Application EX 15 (2x)
- Fees (Modelo 790 Cod. 012)
To apply for a Residence you need:
As an employee, worker, or self-employed person in Spain
- ID card or passport plus a copy
- Registration at the town hall (Empadronamiento, max. 3 months old)
- 2 photos
- Application EX18 (2x)
- Fees (Modelo 790 Cod. 012)
As an employee or worker:
- Employment contract
- Last payroll (Nomina)
As a self-employed person:
- Working Life
- Last Income Statement (Modelo 130)
As a pensioner:
- ID card or passport plus 1 copy
- Registration at the town hall (Empadronamiento, max. 3 months old)
- 2 photos
- Original S1 or E121 Pension Certificate (translated into Spanish)
- Application EX 18 (2x)
- Fees (Modelo 790 Cod. 012)
For non-pensioners:
- ID card or passport plus 1 copy
- Registration at the town hall (Empadronamiento, max. 3 months old)
- 2 photos
- Private health insurance certificate in the original (with data of the holder) and this sentence:
“ASSISTENCIA PRIMARIA, ESPECIALIDADES, INGRESOS HOSPITALARIOS E INTERVENCIONES QUIRURGICAS”,
- without conditions and additional payments and valid for at least 1 year in Spain
- Proof (account statement, only income) of sufficient financial means to live in the country (at least 7,000€ per person/year as monthly income)
